As demand for healthcare services in Myanmar rises above its ability to meet that demand, the sector has been identified as a top priority for investments from external sources. As a matter of fact, due to its proximity to Myanmar and the abundance of skills in pharmaceutical production and hospital management, India has been singled out as a promising investor.
The country has been stepping up efforts to draw much-needed investments into its healthcare sector. One example was during a Market Outreach Programme hosted by the Export-Import Bank of India on 5 February 2018. The Myanmar Times reported that the event sought to promote investment opportunities and discuss the challenges involved in expanding Myanmar’s healthcare sector, and was attended by a delegation of Indian investors and healthcare professionals.

These efforts to draw investors from India are a result of the signing of an MOU between both countries last September to cooperate in the field of health and medicine. Under the agreement, India will provide training for local medical professionals, provide assistance in human resource development and hospital management, and provide input in the drawing up of regulations for trading in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

The Director General of the Ministry of Health & Sports, Dr Kyaw Zin Thant has stated his belief that Indian investors would add much value to the local healthcare industry.  He also mentioned that the Ministry of Health & Sports is fully committed to strengthening Myanmar’s healthcare system and achieving universal health coverage following the successful adoption of the Myanmar National Healthcare Plan from 2017-2021. The government has supported their efforts with a grant of one billion kyats (US$740,000) last November for research and development in the health sector.

These circumstances make it the perfect time for companies in the healthcare industry to explore lucrative business and investment opportunities in Myanmar. In light of that, the MEDEX 2018 expo, Myanmar’s No.1 International Medical and Pharmaceutical Equipment & Supply Exhibition intends to provide a suitable platform for those in the medical and pharmaceutical profession to source for equipment and supplies and get updated on the latest developments and issues. It is expected to be largest industry gathering in Myanmar and is expected to showcase over 200 leading international brands.
